We set out before sunrise for the Kudremukh peak trek — one of the classic treks in the Western Ghats. Rolling shola grasslands, river crossings, and a summit that looks like something out of a postcard.

The trail

  • Distance: ~18 km round trip
  • Vibe: a quad-burning, soul-soothing climb
  • Best season: post-monsoon, when everything is impossibly green

The streams were freezing, the leeches were enthusiastic, and the views were absolutely worth it.

Notes to self

  1. Carry more water than you think you need.
  2. Salt for the leeches. Trust me.
  3. Stop more often to just look around.
